Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 9 April 2009

Threat of losing home

• I READ with great interest your article ("Eviction threat to widow”, April 2).
Contrast the attitude of the landlord who bought the property for £32,000 and now expects to sell it for as much as £3million, with that of the elderly tenant. She is a lady in her 70s who has lived in her rented home for the past 45 years. She has supported local charities and helped found the Netherhall Gardens Community Association. Because of her involvement in community life is described as “a much loved figure in the street”.
There will not be many of your readers, who, at a time when the spotlight is firmly on those who want a profit at all costs, will have much sympathy for the landlord.
But there will be a very large number indeed who will understand that – through no fault of their own – long-term Camden residents like Patricia Whitehouse are on the verge of losing the roof over their head.
So on behalf of the Camden Federation of Private Tenants, I would like to wish Mrs Whitehouse all the best with the fight to keep her home.
