Lessons of tragic saga of Barney’s death
• IT gives me no pleasure to see justice done at the Old Bailey regarding the untimely death of Barney Kennedy (Barney’s death: council fined £40k at Old Bailey, March 26).
The New Journal has, thank goodness, kept its readership informed of this whole sorry saga, from day one. It has not made comfortable reading for us and one can only imagine what it must have been like for for Barney’s family and loved ones.
John Williams, defending the council, said that Camden had a “good safety record”.
His words have a hollow ring about them.
The problem with this Camden Council is that they waste so much money by allowing shoddy work to take place and not inspecting it at the time. In addition, they do not have running programmes of maintenance that they used to have. Everything these days is: let it run until it breaks down and then we will replace it, when proper servicing would save us and them a fortune. Living in council housing does not make a person a second-class citizen and Alan Walter gave his life to make sure that was still the case.
