Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Son’s ordeal after Camden couldn’t offer school place

• THROUGH no choice of my own, my son had to attend a secondary school out of borough, as there were no places available in Camden, which turned out to be the worst thing that could have happened to him.
I originally applied to William Ellis, who said that they prioritise pupils who either have siblings already attending or those living nearest to the school.
After an appeal, at which I stipulated it would be unfair to offer him a place as term started, that is exactly what they did.
As I had already purchased a uniform for the other school, I declined but kept his name on the waiting list.
I didn’t expect, a year later, to have to remove my son from the other school, due to constant racist and anti-semitic bullying which he endured on a daily basis. He is Jewish and mixed Caribbean/white.
When contacting Camden education department, they told me that they dealt with Year 7 pupils and this I would have to sort out for myself.
I wrote and spoke to William Ellis, who were far from sympathetic and said that I would have to make an appeal, but that wouldn’t be for 30 school days after receiving the papers. At least May in my estimation.
I also wrote to Hampstead School, who firstly I spoke to, and was informed that there were no places. After writing them a letter in great detail, explaining what my son was going through, they invited him along for an interview and didn’t hesitate to offer him a place.
They were horrified and appalled by what my son had suffered at the hands of the bullies.
In today’s multicultural society, my son should never had have to go through what he did but now, thankfully to Hampstead School, my son’s sanity and peace of mind has been reinstated.
