Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 26 March 2009

X-Factor vote is no way to fund parks

• THE Tory Mayor of London recently conducted a bizarre X Factor-style public vote on which London parks should receive funding for improvements.
Coram Fields in King’s Cross polled the largest vote in Camden but it was no way near enough to get any of the available money.
Every Camden resident wants to see long-term investment in our public open spaces.
I think it is extremely unfortunate that the mayor decided to pitch park against park.
Coram Fields serves some of the most deprived communities in the borough yet has lost out and there is no promise that it will receive additional funds in the future.
The situation for Coram Fields was not helped in any way by the confused support of the Liberal Democrat/ Tory administration in Camden.
Camden’s publicity initially supported Lincoln’s Inn Fields for support and then opted for Coram Fields at a later date.
The confusion on behalf of the Lib Dems clearly cost Coram Fields many votes.
Our parks and open spaces are the lungs of our city and let residents get some much-needed rest and recreation.
I hope that the mayor gets a proper strategy for investing in our parks in the future in partnership with Camden.
Pitching park against park is not the route we should take to preserve them for future generations.
Cllr Jonathan Simpson
Labour, King’s Cross ward
