Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 March 2009

Atomic did not bomb!

• RE: Tony Kiely’s review of Doctor Atomic (Dr Atomic, or: How I learned to stop listening and leave the room, March 12).
Did Mr Kiely actually “leave the room” without watching the opera?
Buried towards the end of the review he mentions that Gerald Finley didn’t sing the lead role at the performance he saw because of ill health. This, I think, greatly reduced his enjoyment, but didn’t justify the partial and inaccurate account he gave of the orchestral music, which were at odds with what I heard.
The long digression was, like his review generally, unhelpful.
Far from being “an awful production”, this was a dramatic and powerful work and Finley’s performance as Oppenheimer, as well as those of the rest of the cast, was a pleasure to see and hear.
