‘Angel’ Ushi’s bench makes its mark
• THIS week is five years on from the funeral of Ursula Bahler, known to everyone as “Ushi”. She was made homeless in Sumatra Road as a result of a dispute over her husband’s will. Becoming known as the “Angel of West Hampstead” she was widely loved and helped those even less fortunate than herself.
After more than three years living rough on the doorstep of the house that had been her home for 37 years, she tragically died of pneumonia in February 2004, at the age of 65. Those who knew her will be gratified to read that the bench that was erected as a memorial to her in Sumatra Road is featured in the “Benchmarks” column by Stephen Emms in TimeOut magazine (March 11-17). As a small commemoration of Ushi’s last three years, I shall be taking part in Vertical Rush, the charity run organised by Shelter on March 19.
