Tredegar take it to the wire

Camden Sunday League

DOUBLE-chasers Lord Tredegar held on to their slender lead at the top of the Division Three table at the weekend with a convincing victory over Surreal Madrid in the Camden Sunday League.
The win leaves Tredegar three points clear of title rivals Pakenham, who they face in their final league game on Sunday in a titanic showdown at Hackney Marshes.
The league leaders will go into the game in confident mood after smashing five past Surreal. Tredegar started brightly and took the lead when Paul Weedon latched onto a perfect through-ball from Garry Macbeth before slotting the ball beyond the on-rushing keeper.
Macbeth then turned from provider to goalscorer with an excellent solo effort, running the length of the pitch and finishing neatly to give Tredegar a 2-0 lead at the break.
The rampant side quickly killed off the game in the second-half when Weedon scored a quick- fire double to complete a stunning hat-trick.
A convincing 5-0 victory was wrapped up in bizarre fashion when a long throw from Daniel Foward was punched into the net by the Surreal keeper for the strangest of own goals.
Pakenham, the only side in the entire league still boasting a 100 per cent record, will still be favourites to land the title as they have two games in hand and a superior goal-difference.
But Tredegar will be looking to push their rivals all the way, starting with a timely win on Sunday. The two teams will also meet again at the end of the month in the Junior Cup final.
Pakenham booked their place in the final at the weekend with a 7-0 win over Crouch End Rangers. Matthew Philipson and Jaron Robinson scored two each, while Daniel Wright, Steve Collins and Daniel Carins were also all on target.
Elsewhere, in Division One, Phoenix continued their quest for a top-three finish with a 3-1 victory over Constitution.
Unstoppable striker James Cole took his personal tally to 20 goals for the season with a magnificent hat-trick.
The win was the perfect tonic for Phoenix ahead of their Senior Cup semi-final this weekend against Division One rivals CS Maritimo.
