Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 12 Febuary 2009

Cash from distressed

• I AM writing to express my distress at the way I was treated by Camden’s housing repairs department recently.
I was locked out of my flat, and thought it would be a simple matter of borrowing a spare key from the housing office.
First of all, I was surprised to discover that the housing office does not keep spare keys! Why ever not? What do they do if they need access in an emergency?
I was instructed to ring the repairs department, and was horrified to discover that they were prepared to send out someone to “force entry to the premises” but only if I paid £200 before anyone would come to help me. I am disabled, and the only income I have is my incapacity benefit – I cannot believe that anyone could be so insensitive and heartless as to refuse to help a disabled woman unless she could suddenly produce £200 from nowhere.
