Staysafe is no curfew
• I WANT to clarify Camden isn’t introducing a “curfew” for children (January 22).
Instead, the purpose of Operation Staysafe is to protect vulnerable young people who are out on the streets late at night and at risk of harm.
I think we have a responsibility to look out for young people if they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they are very young and alone, or they are mixing with adults who may be a threat to their safety.
An officer would only approach a young person who is potentially in danger.
The operation is certainly not designed to restrict the liberty of teenagers, or to stop them going about their day-to-day lives.
The operation is a joined-up initiative, including the police, social services and youth workers, allowing young people who are at risk to be put in touch with the appropriate support services.
The pilot of Operation Staysafe begins next month, and I will be closely monitoring its progress.
Not least to ensure that the interests and safety of young people are paramount in the way it operates.
