Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 8 January 2009

24 bus blues

• WHEN hoping a 24 bus may come along to take me to my work at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead, I frequently have had to wait much too long at the Ferdinand Street stop.
Nor is it unusual to then have the bus come along only to have its destination blind read “Not in service”.
Last Monday, just after 9am, three buses designated “Not in service” went past before a fourth bus finally arrived – but then, quite frankly, the state of its interior was was so filthy it should not have been in service.
Then, also that morning, my husband recorded at least 10 buses between 9.24 and 9.58 – an average of one bus every three minutes. All I want is for one clean bus to arrive and stop within 10 minutes or less! Is that too much to ask?
Also, coming from Victoria to Ferdinand Street, buses are frequently being terminated – without any form of prior warning – short of their original signed Hampstead Heath destination. Why is this?
London General Transport Services initially performed well, when they took over the 24 service, but it gradually deteriorated into a (literally) rubbish service.
Given the money they make through subsidies, they should keep up a decent reliable and clean bus service.
