The New Journal’s stand-in Santa, Jack Courtney O’Connor, meets Eva Williams as he delivers a hamper to the Camden Town pensioner
The New Journal’s stand-in Santa, Jack Courtney O’Connor, meets Eva Williams as he delivers a hamper to the Camden Town pensioner
It’s a wrap! Hamper run is completed

THERE was a toast to old friends during the annual New Journal Christmas Hamper drop – the magical part of the festive season when your donations are turned into a special present for the borough’s most in need.
Eva Williams, who is in her 70s, recalled the work of Barry Sullivan as she helped collect the bulging hampers.
Mr Sullivan, who died earlier this year from cancer, was fondly remembered in Camden Town for his big-hearted gestures at the helm of the Camden Town Neighbourhood Advice Centre. He would spend a day helping distribute Christmas hampers who needed them most.
Mrs Williams, of College Place, Camden Town, who was nominated for a hamper by her son Anthony, said: “Barry was a great man. It’s a bit sad – he would be doing this and rushing around.”
Mrs Williams only puts the heating on for a few hours a day and lives on a small pension. She said receiving a hamper “does help when you’re on your own”.
The New Journal has now completed its delivery run and hundreds have unwrapped their surprise gifts – with a little help from theatre reviewer Jack Courtney O’Connor, who stood in for our Santa in the run-up to Christmas.
It was a wonderful effort all made possible by donations from our generous readers who dug deep this year despite the bleak economic conditions, to make sure as many people as possible could enjoy Christmas.

THANK YOU!
