Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 December 2008

As we dive into recession, take time to celebrate the Cuban revolution

• AS we move into 2009 with both hopes and fears, we ask that your readers remember that it is the 50th anniversary of the revolution in Cuba. To have preserved national independence and socialism in a small island blockaded by the mighty USA is an achievement that surely deserves our celebration.
On Saturday January 17, there will be a meeting, followed by a cultural event with live music from Cuba and Latin America, called Rock around the Blockade, at Bolivar Hall in Grafton Way.
Speakers from the Cuban, Bolivian and Venezuelan embassies will talk about Cuba’s phenomenal achievements in education and health and their support for similar programmes elsewhere in Latin America.
We will also hear from Bob Crow, general secretary of the RMT union and Jeremy Dear of the NUJ.
The event will launch us nicely into international support for progressive struggles in the world and may help us to see our way more clearly out of the dangers that face working-class people in this country with the ever-deepening recession. All are invited to join in and participate.
