Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 December 2008

A Parisian’s view of new St Pancras

• I RECENTLY came to London by Eurostar for the first time since the St Pancras International was opened.
The station is truly magnificent and quite breathtaking.
However, there are serveral points which perhaps could be improved.
There is no drop-off point near the station. I was lucky enough to have friends who drove me to St Pancras for my return journey, but they had to stop illegally on the King’s Cross side of the station.
The drivers behind didn’t hoot and wave their arms as they would have done here in Paris, but all the same, it was rather embarrassing to hold up traffic, if only for a few seconds.
Having scrambled out of the car with my luggage, I had to cross the station to find a trolley.
There must be several trolley stands, but they are not easy to find.
I brought my postcards of London back to Paris without posting them because no one – even at the information desk, could tell me where to find a post office or letter box.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to put a letter box near the Eurostar departure hall for forgetful travellers, as there is one at the Gare du Nord in Paris.
And it crossed my mind also that if the station had to be evacuated, which we all hope will never happen, where would everyone go? There is no space near the station.
The aim of my letter is not to criticise, but to suggest.
These details may seem trivial to younger travellers, but many of us, like me, are over 70 and not quite as sprightly as we used to be.
