Camden New Journal - CROW by RICHARD OSLEY and PIP WROE
Published: 11 December 2008

No excuses for booing Eboue – except that he really loves it!

ARSENAL fans have been criticised this week for their vicious jeering of Emmanuel Eboue when he was substituted against Wigan on Saturday. The criticism had its merits: However badly Eboue was playing, the snarling from the stands was over the top.
But those who have revelled in dishing out lectures about never booing your own players this week should check their own supporters’ section for unkind behaviour.
Like the Liverpool fans who booed their entire team off in a match that saw them move to the top of the league earlier this season – just because it had ended a draw.
Like the Spurs fans who are being sought by the police for the disgusting abuse directed at Sol Campbell, one of their former heroes.
Like fickle Chelsea fans who didn’t bother to show up in the 1980s and like the Moan United fans who had to be told off by their own manager for singing outrageous songs about Arsene Wenger.
And so on, and so on... Arsenal fans were wrong to boo Eboue but it’s a hard lesson to take from some of the worst fans in the league.
* Did you do a double-take as well? I think we were all impressed with just how devoted Juande Ramos was in his attempts to ruin Tottenham, but nobody could have guessed his prize for sinking Spurs would be a top job at Real Madrid. That’s a fine reward for my favouritest ever Spurs boss.

HAS it taken Arsenal fans four years to realise that Emmanuel Eboue plays for their team?
He’s been diving, cheating, swearing and fouling his heart out for four long seasons, at times quite literally on his knees begging for attention, and nothing.
Then he has one terrible game against Wigan on Saturday and at last he’s noticed, not for his trademark appalling behaviour, this time for appalling football.
Eboue has needed booing for four years. He wept on Saturday because all that negativity, generated by him and directed at him, was the happiest moment of his life.
Keep booing him, he loves it.
At Spurs we took a slightly different approach, the sarcastic applause and cheers when our keeper was in the mood for a clanger.
Either way, a bit of anger from the fans keeps the standards high, unless of course you happen to support Real Madrid.
They have just employed Juande Ramos to turn around their fortunes. They currently lie nine points off the top in fifth, so this seems an astute appointment. Few people will doubt his ability to get them relegated.
This is just the latest in a string of crazy, desperate, managerial appointments enforced by the wrath of the fans. At Blackburn they were chanting the name of Graeme Souness this weekend. The world has gone mad.
