Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 11 December 2008

Deaths in building industry

• THE Camden branch of Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians congratulates wholeheartedly the New Journal’s excellent exposure of the tragic death of scaffolder Barney Kennedy.
We would like to see the national newspapers take your lead and expose any employers whose actions have brought about any unnecessary death in the building industry.
Until and unless each building site is treated as a crime scene until proved otherwise (just as with fatal road accidents, with nothing moved or disturbed), these deaths will continue.
In the past 20 years 1,000 building workers have been killed, but no employer has ever spent a single day behind bars.
Until the law is changed to ensure that guilty employers are jailed for criminal negligence, we can look forward to 20 more years of unnecessary deaths on building sites.
Good wishes for your splendid work.
