Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 11 December 2008

King’s Cross project will give us jobs, homes and more

• MICHAEL Edwards (Letters, November 27) says the reason why so many of us are still unhappy about the outcome (re: the King’s Cross development) is that all this consultation has not led to a scheme which better meets the needs of low and middle income groups; that the political as well as the financial cards were stacked too heavily against these needs being met.
The King’s Cross Railway Lands group (which he co-chairs) has probably delayed the development by at least two years this time around.
If Argent, the developer, had started on the work two years ago we would have had affordable homes and jobs this year.
Next year Argent will be building up to 200 homes (most affordable) with a housing trust.
Argent will also have a construction training centre for up to 80 local young people who will be offered work placements either on the site or within London with one of Argent’s four contractors.
We also have Sainsbury, which will create more jobs.
Sainsbury will also be working with local schools on food chains and healthy eating.
The new building for Sainsbury will emit 60 per cent less CO2 than current day new buildings.
Jobs, affordable homes, education, environmental sustainability, public open spaces…
What more does Michael Edwards want?
