Battle against Brill Place superlab scheme goes on
• SOME of us are still campaigning to stop the inane use of Brill Place, the land behind the British Library, as a medical research centre.
As we have said, there are dangers from emissions of pathogens; there is a real concern at having this exploratory medical research centre in the midst of a heavily built-up housing and railway area; and you will have seen from the New Journal (Safety fears for superlab, December 4) that Councillor Ben Rawlings, when executive member for community safety, had concerns. Ignored, it seems, by the planners and officers and council members.
I have emailed time and time again to seek a resolution on this item.
I am really concerned for the safety of residents on the Ossulston estate; Monica Shaw estate, Phoenix Court, the staff of Disabled in Camden etc etc and have asked the leader of the council, Keith Moffitt, to come back to me and those residents locally who have indicated concern.
We need some progress before the planning application goes in and someone up at the top gives it the OK even though it does not meet the planning brief.
I say that because I firmly believe that St Pancras and Somers Town ward is always the dumping ground for all poorly-thought-out projects and the views of local people and we ward councillors are never taken into account .
We want housing on this site, not centres for animal experimentation; we have so little housing land in Camden.
We cannot lose this piece.
I know the land has been bought but, even at this stage, decisions can be changed… if we care enough.
Please, Councillor Moffitt and the executive of the council, come back to us urgently.
