Plaque to remember Peggy Jay

A COMMEMORATIVE plaque is to be unveiled at Hampstead Parish Church next month in honour of Peggy Jay, the Labour politician and life president of the Heath and Hampstead Society, who died last year.
Her son, Peter Jay, the former British ambassador in Washington, revealed that his mother had told her family how she wished to be remembered – and this included a plaque in the churchyard.
He said: “She left detailed, though sometimes inconsistent, instructions. She loved Hampstead in childhood, in youth, in the war, as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and as a campaigner.”
The unveiling will take place on January 28, the anniversary of Peggy’s birthday – she was 94 when she died – and funeral last year. The plaque has been placed in the upper covered terrace of the churchyard at St John at Hampstead, Church Row.
The plaque ceremony will include a prayer from the vicar, the Reverend Stephen Tucker, followed by a few words from current chairman of the Heath and Hampstead Society, Tony Hillier.
