Points on charging
• I HAVE good news for Carolyn Sceales of Dartmouth Park (Electric cars boost under fire, November 27) we already do offer free parking for electric cars in pay-and-display bays so long as the owner of the vehicle has a renewable electricity contract at home.
Because here’s the thing about electric cars: if they are charged using electricity which comes from coal or gas-fired power stations, then they are less environmentally friendly than petrol or diesel cars.
So we must use electricity from renewable sources to charge them.
The second thing about electric cars is they need to be regularly charged and so we end up with the situation where one car is hogging a charging point overnight and nobody can be sure that their car will be charged.
The only way to solve that would be to have an on-street charging point per electric car, that is, individual spaces.
But we don’t have enough road space for this.
In my opinion the ideal solution for electric cars is to use them for car clubs because then the vehicle always goes back to the same place and it sits on the car club bay roughly 40 per cent of the day.
I’ve asked a couple of car club companies to think about how they could make this work technologically.
I would rather see Transport for London money spent on this than on putting a few more charging points that don’t stack up in our streets.
