Lobbying success is very good news for local jobseekers
• YOUR readers in Kilburn will be pleased to know that the JobCentre Plus in Cambridge Avenue has been given a reprieve, thanks to concerted lobbying by local Labour campaigners.
The JCP, used by many residents in Kilburn, had been threatened with closure as part of a national review by JobCentre Plus. If it went ahead, jobseekers would have had to go as far afield as Kentish Town, Highgate, Willesden or North Kensington.
With more than 6 per cent of people in Kilburn unemployed, the JCP plays a vital role, particularly as we face an economic downturn.
A joint effort by Hamsptead and Highgate Labour MP Glenda Jackson, together with Labour London Assembly member Navin Shah and Brent Labour councillor Mary Arnold, made sure that the decision by the Department for Work and Pensions was reversed.
This is great news.
It shows that the government does listen to local people, and that having a Labour MP, GLA member and councillor is of real benefit to our area.
They can deliver solid results, rather than simply shouting from the sidelines as the Liberal Democrats do.
