Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 4 December 2008

New surgery system is not doing my heart any favours

• I WOULD like to add my support to June Swan’s concerns regarding the recent changes in service in the Camden Road surgery (Surgery locums coming and going, November 20).
Our family has been registered at the Camden Road surgery since 1986 and I am bewildered at the changes there.
It seems that increasing the opening hours has come at a human cost of those employed in the surgery being stressed out to such a degree that “patience” will lose out. When we were being consulted about the changes, had I been told that I would be asked to leave the room by my doctor because he was on duty to receive telephone calls, I would not have agreed to the changes.
I am highly offended that my consultation with my doctor had to be interrupted not once but three times in the space of 10 minutes.
My visits to the doctor were always a pleasant and welcoming experience. Now I end up leaving more stressed then I arrived, which is not doing my heart any favours.
And I dread going there!
I would like to stress that my feelings are not a reflection on the staff or senior doctor there but I am highly disappointed with the new system which in my opinion is a disaster waiting to happen.
Why fix something which was working so perfectly?

• IT remains my view after working in the NHS for 30 years that polyclinics will not work, and will result in more patients going to A&E departments.
Now that Britain is in recession the government needs to abolish all NHS foundation trusts and the £16billion NHS patients’ record computer system.
I expect the people of Britain will have to change the government to stop NHS waste.
What is needed to improve the NHS in Britain is to keep local general hospitals open, as well as specialist mental hospitals.
With many Londoners turning to alternative health treatment I remind clients to check Criminal Records Bureau papers of visiting therapists.
JOHN STURMAN, Enfield
