Young swim stars miss out by one race

YOUNGSTERS from Anaconda Swimming Club came within touching distance of glory on Saturday when they narrowly missed winning the Jim Savoury Trophy.
Swim stars from the Caledonian Road-based club put in some outstanding individual and relay displays at the Enfield meet, winning 13 gold medals with a series of record-breaking performances. Magnificent seven Fred Celul, Lauren Spiers, Kathleen Bartha, Clare Walton, John Rivers, Wayne Lock and Brett McLean all put in excellent swims to win their individual events.
McLean smashed club records in both the 100m butterfly and the individual medley, while Rivers produced an excellent fly swim of 1.06.87 to knock over a second off the previous mark.
The records continued to tumble with Freddie Cornwell achieving a superb second-place finish in the 50m butterfly, while Walton and Dom McLoughlin both beat the clock in their 100m individual medleys.
There was also a big cheer for Leo Kirby, who broke a seven year old mark with his sub-minute time of 58.68 in the 100m freestyle. Elsewhere Andrew Bartha, Ronnie and Joe Grubb, Jodie Sees, Harley Greer, Tomas Sitek, Andrew Boadi and Padraig Lynch were all among the relay winners.
In a fantastic finale, Steve Jones set two personal best times before the Open Men’s team of Kirby, McLean, Lock and Rivers won the final event of the day in a record-breaking time of 48.58.
Anaconda missed out on the trophy by just one race, finishing second behind Edmonton Phoenix.
