School tells parents: ‘Don’t worry’

Meeting held to discuss concerns in the wake of Ofsted report that criticised lessons

GOVERNORS have defended Hampstead School’s performance and told parents not to worry at a meeting held last week to discuss a recent Ofsted report.
Inspectors ruled earlier this month that lessons were “barely satisfactory and a few are inadequate” but did praise the West Hampstead school for its improvements since a previous Ofsted report in 2005.
School governors, the headteacher and a parents’ group met last Wednesday to discuss the findings of the report.
Geoff Berridge, chairman of the board of governors, said: “We had a substantial meeting to talk about the Ofsted inspection – it was constructive.”
While the Ofsted report raised some criticisms, Mr Berridge said the meeting was held to talk about parents’ concerns and give the governors a chance to discuss the improvements already made and those they are on the road to achieving.
Luke Howard from Parents Voice said: “There was a proposal from one person that the governors resign. I’m not sure how much support there was for it – if any – but some people were not comfortable with making a decision then so we said we’d talk about it in January.”
It was a closed meeting.
Mr Berridge disputed Mr Howard’s account, saying there was no decision to add the motion to January’s agenda.
He added that the issue of the governors resigning was “raised by a single individual”.
While the Westbere Road school was given a “satisfactory” rating this month, it is understood it was closer to “good” than a previous “satisfactory” rating in 2005.
