Curtis set to take on the world
OLYMPIC hopeful Curtis Miller was back in the limelight on Saturday as he beat some of the top young fencers in the UK to win the Whitgift Under-20s Sabre Championships, held at Whitgift School in south Croydon. The triumphant 16-year-old showed immense talent as he beat two of the highest ranked juniors in the country to win the tournament, which also acts as a qualifier for the World Junior Championships.
Miller, who trains at Camden Fencing Club, struggled in the early stages as he lost two of his first five pool matches.
Entering the elimination rounds with a low seeding of 23rd, the Holloway youngster started to display his true form as he battled his way through to the semi-finals, where he beat Britain’s third ranked junior Jake Rowley 15-13.
Miller went one better in the final, where he overcame a hand injury to beat British number two Alexander Crutchett 15-9 to be crowned champion.
Team-mate Soji Aiyenuro also put in a promising performance to finish in the last eight despite being just 14 years old.
Out of a field of 51 fencers, the Camden contingent all picked up respectable finishes, with twins Gianfranco and Fabio Artesi taking 20th and 23rd place respectively, while Eucalypta Bradley finished 14th out of 27 fencers in the girls’ competition.
Camden also entered 37 fencers into the London Youth Championships. It proved a winning weekend for the club, with a record-breaking 18 sabreurs and eight foilists qualifying for the British Youth Championships, which will be held in Stoke in January.
