Leo Stevenson’s speciality is ‘faking’ the works of 17th-century Dutch artists

Great pretender: Art fakes go on show

IF you head to an art gallery in West Hampstead this week, you could be forgiven for thinking you have stumbled across a stash of art pilfered from the world’s leading exhibitions.
The Artisitic Galleries on West End Lane opens a unique show this Friday by Leo Stevenson – regarded as one of the world’s leading art fakers.
Among his works is a set of the Elgin Marbles to lend to the Greek government, which he created while working at the British Museum.
The exhibition, which starts tomorrow (Friday), includes around 55 examples of his take on paintings by Old Masters.
Mr Stevenson said: “I am known for fakes – that is, not copies but works in the style of a painter. I use the technique of the person: my speciality is 17th-century Dutch art.”
