Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 November 2008

Beneficial education is offered to all

• JENNY Stephen, headmistress of South Hampstead High School, wrote to you to defend the planning application for a new building on her school’s site (Importance of education the crucial point at issue, November 6).
The education which benefits society is the one that is offered to all those who deserve it, irrespective of their ability to pay. That is not the case for the education that is being provided at South Hampstead High School, however good its quality. The education on offer there is of benefit purely to the already privileged children who are on its school roll.
It is effectively a business that provides a valuable service to its customers and should be treated with the same dignity and respect afforded to any other business. It should not claim preferential treatment as if it provided a benefit to the community.
