Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

No to ‘awful’ Noho: name should honour hospital

• I FULLY agree with the sentiments expressed by Councillor Rebecca Hossack concerning the appalling vandalism perpetrated by the Candy brothers who have recently demolished the Middlesex Hospital (Noho Square is left in bad shape as brothers pull out, November 6).
Among the most beautiful and historic buildings in central London, it’s now just an ugly and tragic demolition site.
Despite much opposition from the local residents (particularly with regard to renaming the site Noho Square). Nick and Christian Candy showed little interest in the local residents’ concerns and feelings, and just brazenly went ahead with this disaster.
Nothing will ever bring back these beautiful buildings but whatever happens in the future I would suggest that the awful Noho Square title be scrapped without delay and replaced instead by Middlesex Square, in memory of the historic hospital and those who were patients, doctors and nurses there, including Florence Nightingale.
Cllr Hossack’s suggestion that a park be constructed with possible allotments would at least benefit the local community, an excellent idea.
I for one am getting pretty fed up with the never-ending ghastly building projects in Fitzrovia by large corporations who seem only interested in making vast profits while gradually ruining the character of this very unique and special area of London.
