Traders pitch in on hamper appeal

GENEROUS traders at Camden Market collected so much money for the New Journal Christmas Hamper Fund they could not lift the cash pot.
The stall-holders had to wheel the giant money jar, containing more than £2,000, to the New Journal offices on Wednesday (yesterday).
Each year they raise hundreds of pounds selling clothes at bargain prices to help those in need at a difficult time of year – pensioners, single-parent families, and community centres.
Peter Johnston, the 70-year-old caretaker of Camden Market, who organised the fundraiser, said it was the biggest haul so far.
“The people of Camden get something out of it and we get money
for the old age pensioners,” he said.
“It makes a big difference for them to know that people are helping them, especially in the recession.”
