Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 06 November 2008

Take a gamble, cross the box and it could cost you £60

• TO update my letter (I am still waiting to see evidence of a yellow box ‘offence’, October 23), my representation against a charge notice was upheld by Camden’s adjudication officer.
One point that readers may wish to be aware of in order to avoid a similar “offence” is that the junction of Highgate Hill towards Kentish Town road (opposite the Bull and Gate pub) is “…an irregular shape that would not ordinarily be acceptable. It has been sanctioned by the DOT for this specific location.” We are stuck with it.
So when entering this boxed junction following another vehicle in front of yours, you are taking a gamble as to whether or not you can exit that boxed junction. If a vehicle in front of yours stops (for any reason) and leads to you stopping the offence has been committed. So this irregular (trap?) boxed junction turns your short trip into a short chapter of the Dice Man. Nice if you like a gamble, but not sure of the road safety or road improvement element at risk here?
The web facility to view CCTV is still “under repair” but copy of footage can be supplied to DVD/VHS. Most boxed junctions make sense. I just feel aggrieved about this particular one, so for those people not fancying a £60 fine on those cold mornings, be aware that you need to consider your crossing (ignore those honks from traffic behind).
The time this takes away to cross at busy periods will no doubt lead to a long back-up of cars past the Forum and the fire station, but better this than losing £60.
