Ofsted in praise of Haverstock

HAVERSTOCK School has cemented its reputation as one of the borough’s fastest-improving secondary comprehensives with a glowing Ofsted inspection report.
The school in Haverstock Hill was put in the “good” bracket by the government assessment body.
Inspectors also said some aspects of life at Haverstock were “outstanding”.
In comparison, William Ellis School in Highgate, traditionally among the front-running schools in Camden, was recently marked a step down in the “satisfactory” grade of Ofsted’s four-point scoring system.
Special praise was heaped on “inspirational” Haverstock headteacher John Dowd, who has overseen a dramatic transformation which has included a complete rebuilding of the school.
He is regarded within Camden’s education community as a smart performer and the warm words will come as no surprise to anybody who has followed the school’s revival.
Mr Dowd said: “We have transformed ourselves into a highly successful and accomplished school and we are well on our way towards an overall judgment as an outstanding school.”
He added: “The improvements at Haverstock have been the result of the collective commitment of very professional and hard-working staff working with an ambitious, vibrant and talented group of young people and their families.”
Haverstock – where Labour’s Foreign Secretary David Miliband and his brother Ed, the government’s climate change minister, went to school – was celebrated for the guidance it gives to pupils and student satisfaction in their own studies.
Pupils leave “well prepared for life in a modern and ethnically diverse society”, the report said.
