Jordan’s pressure pays off
HARD-hitting Jordan Grannum stepped between the ropes on Thursday to face Ben Watkinson in the Finchley Amateur Boxing Club Show at the Boston Dome in Tufnell Park. The highly-rated 16-year-old, who trains at Islington Boxing Club in Archway, put in a clean and clinical performance to beat Watkinson over three gruelling rounds of action.
In a quiet first round both boxers took time to plan their strategy as they demonstrated good technical ability to finish all square.
There was more excitement in the second round as the two youngsters traded some good blows. Grannum began to emerge as the dominant force with an array of powerful shots.
In the third round Watkinson, of Hove ABC in Brighton, stepped up the aggression in an attempt to impose himself on the fight. But Grannum stood firm, and countered with some terrific right-hand shots to the body.
The Islington fighter kept up the pressure, inflicting a standing count on Watkinson late on in the fight. At the end of the battle, it was Grannum’s hand that was raised in victory as the judges awarded him a unanimous points win.
