Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 16 October 2008

Think again about this monstrous scheme

THE monstrous proposal to demolish the Waites Houses in Priory Road, South Hampstead, designed for older people and replace them by a monolithic block of flats (Battle to save old people’s homes, October 9) should be subjected to a public inquiry.
All the issues could be properly and fairly assessed there.
About half an hour before a council planning committee, when members do not even visit the site, is clearly not enough time to reach an informed decision.
If passed the proposal would mean an actual housing loss, rather than a gain (by nearly 20 units). It would be hugely expensive in terms of carbon emissions (by the felling of trees, demolition and reconstruction), of social cost including the eviction of tenants, and of money.
Lost, too, would be the beautiful restful garden and there would be no provision for the schoolchildren and teenagers of the incoming families as well as fewer homes for older people.
I call upon the council to hold a public inquiry and Octavia Housing to think again and plan for constructive refurbishment instead.
