Club records smashed in Anaconda’s double trophy triumph
YOUNGSTERS from Anaconda Swimming Club caused a splash this week when they captured two trophies on the same night. Swim stars from the club, which is based at the Cally Pool in Caledonian Road, achieved unrivalled glory as they won the Millbank Trophy Gala and the North London Graded League.
Overall the swimmers recorded an astonishing 62 personal bests, claiming 28 individual victories and seven new club records as they made a sensational start to the season.
Leo Kirby and John Rivers set the scene in the Millbank Trophy Gala, which was held at Park Road Pool in Haringey.
Rivers smashed the Anaconda club record by almost two seconds when he clocked a time of 58.70 in the 100m freestyle. Kirby also broke the coveted minute barrier when he recorded a time of 59.23 in the same event.
Other club records were set by Morgan Mockler in the 50m butterfly and the 25m backstroke, Clare Walton in the 25m backstroke, Dom McLoughlin in the 50m backstroke and Freddy Cornwell in the 50m butterfly.
In his first ever gala, Sam Newmarch was the swimming star of the North London Graded League, which was held in Feltham. The 11-year-old speedster set four new personal bests including a 3.5 second improvement in the 50m freestyle.
The most improved swimmer at the meet was Gil Potter for his swim in the 100m breaststroke, while the same accolade in the Park Road competition
went to Megan Thompson, who recorded a flying freestyle time of 37.39 to earn a berth in the senior Speedo team.
Along with nine relay team victories, there was individual success for Jodie Sees, Iona Davey, Laura Minoli, Peter Yates, Harley Greer, Verity Hayes, Aimee-Rose Nahal, Padraig Lynch, Kathleen Bartha, Poppy Bedwell and Mei Corbett.
