Curtis makes his point
SWASHBUCKLING swordsman Curtis Miller made it back-to-back tournament wins at the weekend when he beat team-mate Soji Aiyenuro by just one point in the final of the British Cadet and Junior Championships, which were held in Sheffield. The dynamic duo, who both train at Camden Fencing Club, showed off their sabre skills as they battled their way through a field of 77 fencers to be the last two standing in the boys’ Under-17s cadet competition.
Soji, who lives in Belsize Park, was leading for much of the match as the two sabreurs contested an epic final.
But it was Olympic hopeful Curtis, who lives in Holloway, who finished the stronger as he fought back to clinch a 15-14 victory.
In the same category, Waldo Ramsay and Fabio Artesi put in creditable performances to finish 12th and 13th respectively, while Fabio’s brother Gianfranco also did well to reach the final 32.
In the boys’ Under-17s junior competition, Fabio caused a major upset when he beat second ranked Thomas Mottershead 15-12 on his way to finishing third.
The final standings also saw Soji and Curtis finishing in eighth and ninth place respectively, while Waldo and Gianfranco again reached the final 32.
In the girls’ competition, Eucalypta Bradley made her long awaited return to fencing after a year out of the sport to finish seventh in the Under-17s cadet competition and 13th in the Under-20s event.
Club-mate Emma Horrix also did well to finish 13th in the Under-17s category.
