Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 2 October 2008

Trusted caretakers swept aside

I WOULD like to bring attention to a serious upheaval Camden Council are inflicting on their caretaking staff by introducing a “pilot” outside cleaning scheme using road sweepers.
This has all been instigated via the “back door” as tenants and leaseholders alike have no idea that they are probably about to lose their caretaker and the service that goes with it.
My wife Angela Godding has been the caretaker on the Ainsworth estate for the past 17 years and has built up a trust and mutual respect with all the occupants of the estate many of whom have grown up knowing her. Consequently, the estate is a very pleasant and “clean” place to live.
Now Camden has decided in it’s “wisdom” that this is of no importance to the running of the estate and wish to remove her from her job and replace her with “faceless” cleaners showing up occasionally without any regard or consultation with Angela or the tenants regarding this.
My wife is devastated and is becoming noticeably ill with the prospect of being relocated somewhere else.
This lack of care and regard for both my wife and the tenants all in the name “trying” a pilot scheme which is probably doomed to failure with the estate becoming, like so many others, a rubbish tip.
This is appalling treatment of my wife (and all the other caretakers who are in the same position) and a clear two fingers up to the tenants who will lose their lifeline and friend.
It was less than six months ago that the caretaking team were being congratulated for their exemplary contribution to state and well-being of Camden estates, and now this faceless and shameful sell-out of it’s employees and residents – absolutely appalling!
