Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 25 September 2008

Saviour of the baths

• WORK has started on the important restoration of Kentish Town baths and it appears is progressing nicely.
Camden residents are in a unique and privileged position by being included in what is happening there every step of the way. The user group has expressed its preference for changing rooms, shower temperatures, colour schemes and more besides. Local people are being given opportunities to comment regarding problems of noise, traffic and other obstacles and these are all being addressed by Camden Council in an extremely professional, pleasant and compliant manner.
However, all of this may not have been possible were it not for the tremendous efforts of Councillor Philip Thompson who, along with me, headed up the campaign to stop the baths from closing altogether. Even though he has resigned his post and left Kentish Town for America in order to further his studies, constituents have much to be grateful to him for.
Without his input into saving the baths, the builders may well be there demolishing the building and not restoring it.
He saved the baths.
Let us be grateful for that. He has realised the consequences of his actions and has vacated his position making way for the great work he started to be continued.
I look forward to seeing completion of the work he started and the existence of Kentish Town baths for many, many years to come.
