Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor

Education measures

• TOM Foot’s article and John Dowd’s response (Our school has crossed no threshold of failure, September 18) highlight a major problem of the limited school performance metrics introduced by the Labour government.

They highlight one aspect of performance that is easy to measure and ignore many other features that are just as important for the children’s educational experience.
As vice-chair of the governors at Haverstock School, I visit it frequently.
What I observe is a happy, energetic, environment with a rich diversity of pupils who are being offered a stimulating education.
Whether it is the production of The Wizard of Oz, the photography exhibition, the concerts, the Finance Academy or simply the atmosphere in the corridors I am impressed by the staff dedication that shines out.
Many of the pupils at Haverstock start with few advantages relative to the rest of our community.
The leadership, commitment and learning culture they experience at Haverstock School is one of them.
Overall performance is improving steadily and recognised by Department for Children, Schools and Families.
Do not let a shortcoming on one narrow measure mislead you about the consistent hard work of its pupils and teachers.
NICK RUSSELL
Vice-chair, Haverstock School Governors, NW6
