Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor

Vehicle wear and tear due to ‘traffic calming’

• ROAD humps, which are also called “traffic calming measures” are high in our part of Camden.
Transport for London and the Department for Transport recommend that they are no more than 75mm high (Traffic Calming Measures 2/96).
Camden measured the height of those in the streets near where I live; some are more than twice that. Some cars (old Minis), ambulances and many single-decker buses cannot pass over humps as high as that without grounding.
Other cars are damaged by repeatedly passing over them. Exhausts, sumps and bulkheads are broken. You can see evidence of that by looking at the surface of the road on either side of a high hump. My car and my friends’ cars have been damaged in this way though it is difficult to prove that the damage is due to one high hump.
The purpose of this letter is to draw attention to this problem. Any ideas as to how this nuisance can be remedied?
