Plea over academy ‘politics’

EDUCATION chiefs at University College London have urged parents to put politics aside and help shape a vision for a new secondary school in Camden.
The UCL Academy, which will specialise in maths, science and foreign languages, is expected to open in Swiss Cottage in September 2011, despite a legal and political campaign against it by objectors.
If the school gets the go-ahead, the way pupils are taught will be shaped by the Gower Street university sponsor. A consultation on its proposals, unveiled this week, is the only chance for parents to have their say.
UCL vice-provost Michael Worton said: “We are in a time of political turbulence over academy schools, and especially here in Camden. But now that the consultation is out, we want to find out what people think about the future of the school, not whether Old Labour hates New Labour or not.”
Opponents have claimed that a school sponsored by UCL would be elitist and focused on grooming pupils for the university.
The consultation is open until November 25. The plans can be viewed at www.uclacademy.com
A public meeting on the plans will be held at the Chadwick Lecture Theatre in Gower Street, Euston, from 6.15pm on October 2.
