Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 18 September 2008

There’s no sense of our local area being left behind

• SOME literature being distributed by the Lib Dems promoting Linda Chung as their candidate for the by-election in Hampstead Town on September 25 is misleading.
It would be misleading whichever political party had produced it.
“Hampstead and South End Green are being left behind” Linda is reported as having said. I can’t speak for Hampstead, of course, but there is absolutely no sense of South End Green being left behind.
The South End Green Association organised the local campaign against the closure of our post office, unsuccessfully, because the whole consultation process was a farce, but we spearheaded that campaign. We were very active in organising a protest outside Hampstead police station, against its possible closure.
A long process with Camden resulted in the green itself being revamped and finally, due to our pressure, the fountain was restored to working order.
We initiated the process by which a new zebra crossing was placed towards the top of Pond Street and the lower one was moved further down.
We liaise closely with a now strong traders’ association at South End Green and the coming months will see events organised by them with our support.
We monitor local planning applications and are represented on the Royal Free Liaison Group. We have a representative on the Hampstead Safer Neighbourhoods Panel and also on the Gospel Oak Panel. We attend the liaison meeting with the Metropolitan Police and the Heath Constabulary. We also attend meetings of the Camden Community and Police Consultative Group.
We are represented on the Heath Consultative Committee.
We monitor bus services, traffic and currently wait to hear of any plans which might involve the green in preparations for 2012.
There are also plans to create a community choir for South End Green which will be called the Fleet Singers.
We greatly value any support which from councillors and the current councillors have given valuable support, but all of the activities mentioned are initiated and activated by South End Green residents.
Left behind – not South End Green. Perhaps Linda Chung needs to do a bit more research.
PAM GILBY
Chairwoman South End Green Association, NW3

Vote language

• I HAVE been following the forthcoming by-election in Hampstead Town with interest, particularly since I have not yet decided who to vote for.
I am however absolutely astounded by the literature being handed out by the Liberal Democrats – the language used and the lack of punctuation and correct grammar is appalling, considering they are a mainstream party trying to run a by-election. I’m afraid Linda, until you learn how to write properly I certainly will not be willing to vote for you.
