Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 18 September 2008

There is plenty of food on Earth to spare the animals

• “A GREAT many of you will hate me for writing about veal,” wrote Primrose Hill’s culinary supremo Clare Latimer (The Good Life, September 11).
She reasoned that if more is not consumed, male calves will be shot at birth, instead of at six months of age.
Mother cows are placid creatures save when their young are threatened: recently a human was trampled to death when he (foolishly) got between a calf and its mother.
So, cows 1, humans some billions. What is hated is the sheer hypocrisy of humans in this matter.
There is enough food in the world for all, provided
meat-eating is abandoned.
Animals are farmed and slaughtered so that humans can devour their carcases.
Though the dominant species on Earth, our populations are decreasing rapidly and places such as rain forests are being cleared, which is detrimental to the Earth’s climate etc.
Buddhists are not known for advocating executing cattle by slitting their throats, thus prolonging their deaths.
Two other major religions are.
Acknowledging that our fellow creatures are sentient beings, it follows that we treat them with compassion and not exploit them.
Clare Latimer could help that cause by creating dishes which are wholesome and without any animal ingredients.
We look forward to the label “no animals suffered in the preparation of this dish” on her future efforts.
