CAMDEN Swiss Cottage Masters had a sensational start to the new swimming season this weekend when they came away from two separate competitions with a batch of medals.
Entering three teams into the Hampstead Heath Duathlon, the swim stars sped to glory as they tackled a series of gruelling races around the Lido before running to the finishing line at the nearby athletics track.
Matt Molloy, who teamed up with Pete Kavanagh, Elizabeth Knowles, Max Heyhurst and Maida Shivik, crossed the finishing post as the fastest male to help lead Swiss Cottage to a memorable win. A team of 13 swimmers from the club were also celebrating at the Barnet Copthall Sprints after winning a mighty haul of 34 medals between them.
Susan Halter, who swam in the 1948 Olympics in London, was among the perfect pool performers.
The sprightly 81-year-old won gold in the 50m and 100m backstroke and the 50m and 100m freestyle.
Team-mate Steve Mogg kept the medal count climbing with victory in the 50m freestyle and the 50m fly before taking bronze in the 100m backstroke and the 100m freestyle. Elsewhere Julie Sapsford took gold in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, while Kyla Steenhart picked up all three medals after winning the 100m breaststroke, capturing silver in the 50m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m freestyle.
The final individual gold of the competition went to Aaron Boersma in the 100m freestyle. Swiss Cottage scooped a top three finish in the event, with Chris Hopton finishing second and Steve Mogg taking bronze position.
In a different order, the trio also dominated the winners’ podium in the 50m freestyle, with Mogg winning gold, Hopton a second silver and Boersma finishing third.
