Details of a screen idol
• DIRK Bogarde was famously inaccurate in recounting his own life: at one point he even seemed unsure how many siblings he had.
However, perhaps you will allow me to correct three errors in the review of my book, Ever, Dirk, the new selection of his letters published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson at £25 (In his own words… picture of a two-faced screen idol, September 4).
His mother was not the sister of David Niven.
His father was not “an arts editor” of The Times, but its first Art Editor, in charge of all the newspaper’s illustrations.
Bogarde died in 1999, not 1990.
