Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 4 September 2008

Snubbing the experts

• WE have now had sight of the letter from Sport England to Camden voicing their deep concerns about the unpopular Dalby Street scheme and its likely impact on the Talacre Community Sports Centre and adjacent Talacre Gardens in the future.
The criticisms from Sport England echo many of the repeated criticisms local people have expressed in the past, and more. Their main issues with unsatisfactory access to the sports centre from the New Dalby Street, the lack of safety for pedestrians and the likely negative impact on the future of the sports facilities at Talacre Gardens are not new. Sports England do not consider marshalling a solution to the defects of this scheme.
Their conclusion is unequivocal: “The council has an opportunity to pull back from the proposed residential block and serve to protect the Talacre’s future sustainability as a public resource by ensuring that the access road remains as it is now. Once this road is removed and the apartment block built the Talacre centre will be compromised. I would invite you to consider the development in the interest of both the community and for sports development and abandon the stopping up of the current Dalby Street.”
Unbelievably in their reply, Camden are disregarding Sport England’s views totally. It is one thing for Camden to ignore the public outcry over this outrageous scheme it is quite another, to snub the national sport body and experts, Sport England, who have invested some £3 million into the centre.
