Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 28 August 2008

Left v Right replaces the yellow tide

YOU portray the competition in the Hampstead Town by-election as a fight between Conservatives and Liberal-Democrats. However, as I recall from your excellent coverage of the recent mayoral elections – the last real ballots cast – the competition is really between Conservatives and Labour.
Tories came first in the ward and Labour second. The Lib Dems not only failed to win the “silver medal” but in Camden as a whole they sunk to a rather dismal fourth place, surpassed even by the Greens.
No doubt the Lib Dems were punished because their councillors were responsible for cutting funds to numerous youth projects, depriving our kids of options and outlets at a time of criminal and economic insecurity. The Lib Dems need to be told such policies are unacceptable.
It seems to me that the Lib Dems’ “yellow tide” is at last receding and voters in Camden prefer a much clearer choice between Left and Right.
