Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 28 August 2008

KO’d by criticism

• JOSH Loeb writes in his criticism of the play, Halpern and Johnson, that Halpern threatened to knock Johnson “into the middle of next week” (Oh vey! Only an old shlemiel would swallow these clichés! July 31)
His point was that while this was fit dialogue for programmes such as EastEnders, it was wrong in this play. He is entitled to like Halpern and Johnson or not, as his taste persuades him. What he may not do is misquote it. I am the actor who plays Halpern; I have not used the words quoted, or any that sound like them, in any performance.
When I was a reporter on the Bolton Evening News, I had over my desk a framed copy of the famous sentence from CP Scott’s article, A Hundred Years, published in 1921: “Comment is free, but facts are sacred.” Perhaps you could bring it to Mr Loeb’s attention.
