Lloyd Buchanan of Buchanan’s Motors inside the Model-T car
Ford is ‘nation’s oldest car’

IT’S so old it has to be started like a wind-up clock by a lever at the front and takes half an hour to get going.
But considering the car is just under a century old – and is the oldest known motor still on the UK’s roads – this Ford Model-T isn’t doing too badly.
And thanks to an annual service by mechanic Lloyd Buchanan, of Buchanan’s Motors in Camden Road, it is in perfect condition.
Created in 1917 by the famous car manufacturer Henry Ford, it was originally sold for $150 and was the first affordable mass-produced car in the world.
Its owner Alex Zada, who uses it for his carpet business, Carltone, based in Marylebone, bought it at an auction in Scotland 15 years ago from a farmer.
The car is one of only two of its kind in the country – the other is at the British Museum. Mr Zada said: “It’s fabulous and it’s good promotion for the business – we get lots of enquiries about the car itself.”
Mr Zada, who winds the car up himself each morning, plans to take it to Brighton to compete in the Antiques Car Run in November.
