Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 August 2008

Geraniums out, cress in

• I TOO am in favour of residents using every piece of available land to produce their own food (We need to produce more of our own food, August 14). I’m chucking out my geraniums, to convert my balcony to grow something slightly more productive, lettuce, cress and cucumbers.
As far as saving energy is concerned, we have to be extra vigilant. I decided to try an economical kettle, which boils only the amount you need. But what I saved on energy consumption was more than outweighed by operating costs of more than £100 a year, including a £4.95 filter each month and descaling with two bottles of white wine vinegar. I finally bought another kettle. The less you put in the quicker it boils and the more you save.
One brilliant energy-saving device is a sensor light run off batteries. It provides the same light as a bedside light but only stays on for 15 seconds. In summary, stock up on batteries and battery rechargers! This is the only way to cut soaring energy prices.
CHRIS HOWARD
Chair, 25 Gresse Street Residents Association
