Smith strike seals Gunner girls’ Community Shield victory
A LATE goal by England striker Kelly Smith earned Arsenal a narrow victory in the Women‘s Community Shield on Thursday at Macclesfield. The league’s top two teams from last term both had early chances before Smith struck on 72 minutes to lead the Gunners to glory. Arsenal manager Vic Akers said afterwards: “It was nice after losing to Everton in the League Cup final to start the new season with a good win against them. The first-half was even, but we dominated the second-half and were worthy winners.”
Arsenal begin the defence of their league title on Sunday when they take on Blackburn Rovers at Boreham Wood FC in a 1pm kick-off. The north Londoners will be boosted by former Birmingham City managers Marcus Bignot and Laura Harvey, and ex-Blues defender Laura Bassett, who all joined Arsenal in the summer.
