Skipper nets to inspire Euro victory Champions League
Qualifying Round
FC Twente 0, Arsenal 2
CAPTAIN William Gallas led by example last night (Wednesday) when he inspired Arsenal to victory in the away leg of their crucial Champions League qualifier against FC Twente. The French defender fired the Gunners in front shortly after the hour mark when he latched on to Robin van Persie’s dangerous inswinging free-kick.
The Dutch side, managed by former England manager Steve McClaren, played the better football in the opening 45 minutes with both Marko Arnautovic and Romano Denneboom wasting good chances to put the hosts ahead.
But the Gallas goal sparked life into the young Gunners side, who went on to all but seal their place in the Champions League main draw when Theo Walcott set up Emmanuel Adebayor for a crucial second late on.
The two goals and a clean sheet should be enough to see Arsene Wenger’s men through their second leg at the Emirates, which takes place on Wednesday, August 27.
